Anyhow, just a ‘garden chat post’ this morning...trying to get this posted before the next crash! :)

Hi Up for a few. Day 4 no power, forecast is for 11pm tonight but no one is believing it. Still way too many outages. Just turning on the generator when we need it, so limited internet time. More time for prayers, and freezing all these green beans. The chinese long ones. We have a ton. Greetings to all.

Sorry to hear, I need to replace my 12 year old Mac too. I’m 2 or 3 IOS updates behind because my machine is so old, hahaha, that it can’t handle the new stuff.

We had a great growing season at the coast, (8B-9a), just hoping to delay the blossom end rot we get whenever “Fogust” rolls in. The cold damp , 54 degrees here this morning, ocean fog that rolls in doesn’t do ripening tomatoes well.

Here in Upstate NY...the corn and tomatoes are sweet as they can be...Everything is huge from the rain...peppers the size of grapefruits...I’m slicing and freezing...

I stupidly put a bunch of seeds in the ground yesterday forgetting about the Tropical Storm headed to my vicinity. Anyway there’s peanuts, corn, new peppers (old plants were worn out), tomatoes and some poppies raring to go for the fall garden. In two more weeks I’ll put in favas and potatoes. I also harvested some seeds for Saltmarsh Mallow bushes and Roselle and put in starter containers. I’mma give chamomile and calendula another shot after multiple failures. We’ll see what happens. Oh, and fall sunflowers too. Good luck with your fall garden!

This afternoon I'm going to plant lettuce (black seeded simpson) seeds, and
spinach (Bloomsdale Long Standing) seeds, and various herbs INDOORS
to start my wintertime indoor salad/herb garden.

Anyone else venturing into hydroponic gardening?

I just purchased an Xtra Large Harvest Right Freeze Dehydrator to cut down on the risk of freezer loss from power loss.

While I have a backup generator, I’m forever out of freezer space and I have three large freezers.

We got 3.5 inches of rain a week ago - today, tomorrow and Tuesday are expected to be over 100 for each day. Plants can't decide what to do except hunker down.

Is tree rat code for squirrel?

Has anyone grown ‘bush’ cucumbers & if so, what was your experience?

After last year, when the vines died after producing 2 cukes & this year with weird stuff happening (cuke shape distorted, hard brown stuff on skin), plus the mess of vines/trellising & taking up valuable garden space, I am done growing cukes .... unless space saving bush cukes are a viable option.

I’m sure your problem with cukes this season was strictly heat-related. They won’t pollinate in high temps, and that also explains your problems with the fruit itself. I’m certain you kept them watered enough, but the relentless heat was most likely the problem.

I didn’t grow any this season, as I don’t need any more pickles or pickle relish, but I DO love the ‘Summer Dance’ and ‘Sweeter Yet’ varieties.

For sure, year before last was because I had to plant them so late (knee). I watered, but the heat was terrible.

This year, the vines did great, but the cukes themselves looked so bad, I didn’t feel I could give them away (fire station gets what we can’t eat).

The big success was the spaghetti squash! Wow, still producing. I have seen a few squash bugs, but they don’t seem to be causing the damage they wreak on yellow & zucchini squash. My SIL is so impressed, she’s going to try growing it next year. The leaves are prickly - no issues with the deer eating either vines or squash that grew through & outside the fence, so I am going to plant it outside the fence next year.

I have been reminded, that if I ever need a quick boost to my Gardening Skills, I should just plant a few dried beans and wait a few days. I planted a few pinto beans in a small outside garden, next to onion and garlic bulbs.

Within days, I was able to enjoy the viewing the growing process, from puffy seed, to emergence of the first root.
The first root becomes thicker and greens up, with roots forming. Soon, I have an actual functioning plant to water.

Like most of you attracted to this topic, I’ve done things like this since my Grade School Science classes. Seeing things grow, develop into full flower status is an uplifting hobby and makes me hopeful.

Thanks for posting these! I’ve seen your threads for years and lived in places it was almost impossible to garden (space, super dry, life happening).

Living where i am now, i said this is the year! God knew i needed more patience thru stumbling blocks :) had some unexpected injuries in early and again late spring so i didnt get to tend edible trees and shrub plants and missed spring cool planting, but did get some summer veggies in before the second injury.

Got some zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers. My dad’s garden did
Great with tomoatoes beans peppers zucchini.

I just started some lettuce seed and cool weather seeds.

Already dreaming of next year’s garden!
